Raptures (2025)
Raptures is a 2025 drama film set in the remote, snow-covered landscapes of northern Sweden during the 1930s. Directed and written by Jon Blåhed, the film follows the deeply personal and harrowing journey of Rakel, a devout Christian woman whose life takes a dark turn when her husband claims to receive divine instructions. What begins as spiritual awakening soon transforms into an extreme sectarian cult, leading Rakel down a path of emotional struggle, internal conflict, and fear.
Rakel’s world is shaken as her husband Teodor begins to attract followers to his radical movement. Isolated from society and under the growing pressure of religious doctrine, Rakel must confront her own faith, identity, and autonomy. As the cult’s beliefs become more explicit and dangerous, Rakel finds herself trapped between obedience and resistance, faith and reason. The film is a slow-burning exploration of psychological manipulation, spiritual extremism, and female agency in a patriarchal structure.
The film is anchored by a powerful performance from Jessica Grabowsky in the lead role. Alongside her, Jakob Öhrman and Maria Issakainen bring depth to a story that is as unsettling as it is thought-provoking. Raptures blends period authenticity with emotional intensity, offering a haunting portrait of faith taken to the edge.
