Renoir (2025)

“Renoir” is a poignant Japanese drama film set in 1987 Tokyo, directed and written by Chie Hayakawa. The story revolves around an 11-year-old girl named Fuki Okita, who is navigating a difficult period in her life. With her father battling a terminal illness and her mother overwhelmed with work-related stress, Fuki’s world is filled with emotional turbulence and silent struggles.

Through Fuki’s sensitive and observant eyes, the film explores not only her family’s hardships but also the quiet despair and resilience of the adults around her. Each character she meets is wrestling with their own dilemmas—some with grief, some with loneliness, and others with the unspoken burdens of daily life. These moments of interaction allow the audience to experience a broader view of human fragility and endurance.

Yui Suzuki delivers a heartfelt performance as Fuki Okita, portraying the emotional depth of a child caught in a world beyond her control. Hikari Ishida plays her mother, Utako Okita, who tries to hold the family together while struggling internally. Lily Franky gives a moving performance as Keiji Okita, Fuki’s ailing father. Supporting roles by Ayumu Nakajima, Yumi Kawai, Ryôta Bandô, and others add meaningful layers to the narrative.
